Sedation

If you suffer from dental anxiety, sedation could help you receive the treatment you need.

Feeling anxious about your dental treatment, or just want the time to pass by quickly? We can make your experience with us easy and relaxed by using intravenous sedation

What is sedation?

Sedation is a technique in dentistry that uses medication to help patients relax and feel calm during dental treatments.

Who is sedation for?

Sedation is an incredibly useful tool for those people who suffer from dental anxiety so severe that they are prevented from getting the care that they need. It can remove the obstacle from dental anxiety or phobia so that you are relaxed and calm for as long as is required.

Sedation can also be useful for patients who are undergoing treatment that takes a longer length of time, as it makes the time pass quickly and can prevent patients from becoming restless or uncomfortable while in the dentist’s chair.

How is sedation done?

At Cotteswold House, we offer intravenous sedation which is administered through the back of your hand. This is a specialist service only provided by highly qualified clinicians who have lots of experience.

Am I suitable for sedation?
If you are generally fit and well, then you are likely to be suitable for intravenous sedation. We would recommend anyone who wants to find out more to book a free consultation with our Treatment Coordinator or Sedationist, for a confidential, no-obligations chat.
Do I need to prepare for sedation?
You will need to bring someone with you who can help take you home, as you will not be able to drive after your treatment. We would also advise you not to eat within 2 hours of your appointment to avoid any nausea. For comfort and safety, we would also ask you to wear a short sleeved top so that we can check your blood pressure easily, and to remove nail varnish so that we can use a finger monitor to check your blood oxygen levels.
What does sedation feel like?
Once the solution has been administered, you’ll feel relaxed, comfortable and content. You will remain lucid throughout, but likely won’t remember much once your treatment is finished.
Will I have any after-effects after sedation?
Sedation wears off quickly but you may feel a little drowsy for up to 24 hours afterwards. Because of this, we would ask you not to do any of the following until this has worn off: drive a vehicle, operate machinery, cook or use a kettle, sign legal documents.
