For many people, a visit to the dentist brings a flutter of nerves. For some, it can feel overwhelming. At Cotteswold House Dental Care, we have always believed that dentistry should feel calm, reassuring and centred around the individual needs of every patient. Over the past year, our team has gained a very special new member who has helped us take that commitment even further. Her name is Posey, and she is our much loved therapy dog in training.
Posey joined us around twelve months ago and it is safe to say she has captured the hearts of the entire team. Her gentle nature and affectionate personality make her perfectly suited to supporting patients who feel anxious about dental treatment. She is currently working through a therapy dog training programme with Paws Therapy Dog Training, and we are incredibly excited for more of our patients to meet her as she continues to grow into her role.
Why a Therapy Dog at a Dental Practice?
Dental anxiety is far more common than many people realise. Whether it stems from a past experience, a fear of the unknown or simply feeling uneasy in clinical environments, it can make even routine appointments feel daunting. This is where therapy animals can make a remarkable difference.
Research has shown that interacting with a friendly animal can lower cortisol, the hormone linked with stress, and increase oxytocin, which is associated with calmness and bonding. Even a short interaction of five to fifteen minutes can significantly reduce self reported anxiety levels. Studies also show that therapy animals can help lower heart rate and blood pressure, both of which contribute to a more relaxed state of mind.
In dentistry, reducing pre-procedure anxiety is incredibly important. Patients who feel calmer tend to have a more positive experience, find it easier to communicate their needs and often feel more confident returning for future care. Children in particular show even greater reductions in anxiety when a therapy animal is present, which can help set the foundation for a lifetime of comfortable dental visits.
Meeting Posey During Your Visit
If you would like to say hello to Posey during your next appointment, she would be delighted to meet you. We understand that not everyone is comfortable around dogs, so Posey is never in the surgery unless a patient specifically requests her. She also does not roam freely around the practice. This ensures that all patients feel safe and respected, including those who may have allergies or prefer not to interact with animals.
As she progresses through her therapy dog training, Posey is learning how to remain calm in busy environments, how to offer comfort without overwhelming patients and how to respond sensitively to people who may be feeling nervous. Her natural gentleness makes her a wonderful companion for those who need a little extra reassurance.
One of our patients, Cynthia Faulkner, recently shared her experience.
“I met Posey today before my treatment. She brought such a calming presence with her. All the potential to be a therapy dog to bring serenity to your surroundings and calmness to your soul. Thank you Cotteswold House.”
Sedation for Patients Who Need Additional Support
While Posey offers emotional comfort, we recognise that some patients require more structured support to feel relaxed during treatment. For those who experience significant anxiety or who are undergoing longer procedures, sedation can be a very effective option.
At Cotteswold House Dental Care, we offer intravenous sedation, which is administered through the back of the hand. This type of sedation is provided only by highly qualified clinicians with extensive experience. It helps patients feel deeply relaxed, makes time seem to pass more quickly and prevents restlessness or discomfort during longer appointments.
Sedation is just one part of our commitment to creating a calm and supportive environment. From the moment you arrive, our receptionists, treatment coordinators, clinicians and of course Posey work together to ensure your visit is as smooth and reassuring as possible.
