Do Invisalign Aligners Change Your Voice? The Lisp Question, Answered

Written by Rachel Addison

If you are considering Invisalign in Gloucester, you may have wondered whether wearing clear aligners could affect the way you speak.

The good news is that, while some people notice a slight change in their speech when they first start wearing Invisalign aligners, this is usually temporary and tends to settle quickly.

Here at Cotteswold House Dental Care, we see patients of all ages choosing Invisalign to discreetly straighten their teeth. Our approach is always focused on making treatment as comfortable, predictable and straightforward as possible.

Can Invisalign cause a lisp?

Some Invisalign patients find that their speech sounds exactly the same, while others may notice a slight lisp during the first few days of treatment.

If a lisp does occur, it is usually because your tongue is getting used to having a new shape and position inside your mouth. The clear aligners sit closely over your teeth, so your tongue may need a little time to adjust.

For most people, any change in speech is simply part of the adjustment period. As your tongue becomes accustomed to the aligners, your speech usually becomes more natural again.

Everyone responds differently, so there is no way to say exactly how noticeable a change in speech will be. However, any lisp is generally temporary, and many patients find they quickly forget they are even wearing their aligners.

Is Invisalign comfortable?

For most patients, Invisalign is comfortable to wear, although you may notice some pressure or mild soreness when you first start treatment or switch to a new set of aligners. This is completely normal and usually settles within a few days as your teeth adjust.

The smooth edges help minimise irritation to your cheeks and gums, and because there are no metal brackets or wires, many patients find Invisalign easier to get used to than traditional braces.

Everyone’s experience is different, but most patients find that Invisalign soon becomes a natural part of their daily routine.

How long does an Invisalign lisp last?

Usually, any change in speech is short-lived.

The best thing you can do is keep wearing your aligners as advised rather than taking them out whenever you need to speak. Your mouth and tongue need time to adapt, and regular wear helps this process happen naturally.

Reading aloud, having conversations and simply speaking normally while wearing your aligners can also help you become accustomed to them more quickly.

Invisalign aligners are designed to be worn for most of the day and night, with the flexibility to remove them for eating, drinking and brushing your teeth. They are made from clear material with smooth edges, so there are no metal brackets or wires to irritate your cheeks and gums.

What happens during Invisalign Treatment?

Your treatment starts with understanding what you would like to change about your smile.

At your free consultation, one of our Treatment Coordinators can carry out a 3D digital scan of your teeth and gums. This allows us to create a smile simulation, giving you an indication of how your teeth could look after treatment before you begin.

This is particularly useful because Invisalign is not simply about making your teeth look straighter. Careful planning considers how your teeth fit together and how the final result will complement your smile.

We often hear patients say that they wish they had started their treatment sooner. For many, being able to straighten their teeth discreetly and continue their normal routine makes Invisalign an appealing option.

Will people notice a difference in my speech?

They may notice a slight change initially, but most people around you are unlikely to be concerned. Your speech normally becomes more natural as your tongue gets used to the aligners.

If you are nervous about speaking with Invisalign, mention this during your consultation. We can talk through what to expect and make sure you understand how your treatment will fit into your lifestyle.

“People couldn’t tell you’ve got them in”

Invisalign patient Ross Morgan, from Coleford, came along to one of our popular Invisalign Open Days. Even after seeing his 3D scan, he admitted, “I didn’t think it was possible to get my teeth looking like they are now.”

Find out why Ross described his experience with us as “flawless from start to finish” in our case studies.
