Dental Sedation in Gloucester: How We Help Anxious Patients Feel Calm

While a trip to the dentist can be an enjoyable moment of self-care for some – a chance to pause, relax, and take a break from the day – we understand that for others, it can feel daunting and trigger anxiety. Many patients are able to manage their fears through breathing techniques, mindfulness, family support, or the expert guidance of our patient coordinators, but we also recognise that some people need a little more to feel truly at ease.

At Cotteswold House Dental Care in Gloucester, we understand these fears and offer modern solutions, including intravenous (IV) sedation, to help patients feel relaxed and comfortable. Our aim is to make every visit calm, reassuring, and as stress-free as possible, so dental anxiety doesn’t prevent you from getting the care you need.

How Dentistry Has Changed

When our practice opened nearly 50 years ago, dentistry was very different. Treatments that many patients now consider routine, such as fillings, extractions, or oral surgery, could be uncomfortable and anxiety-inducing. Over the years, modern dentistry has come a long way.

Advances in local anaesthesia, sedation, and minimally invasive techniques have made treatments largely comfortable. Today, we can carry out procedures that were once painful with minimal discomfort. Careful pain management, gentle techniques, and support for anxious patients ensure that visits are far less stressful than in the past.

If you struggle with dental anxiety, sedation could be the key to receiving the care you need without fear.

What Is Dental Sedation?

Sedation in dentistry is a method of using medication to help patients feel relaxed and calm during treatment. It is particularly useful for:

  • Patients who experience severe dental anxiety or phobia

  • Those who avoid the dentist because of past traumatic experiences

  • People undergoing longer or more complex procedures who may become restless or uncomfortable

At Cotteswold House Dental Care, we offer intravenous sedation, administered through the back of your hand by highly qualified clinicians with specialist training and extensive experience.

Benefits of Sedation

Choosing sedation at our Gloucester practice provides several advantages:

  • Relieves dental phobia – Sedation removes anxiety as a barrier to treatment

  • Promotes comfort – Patients remain relaxed throughout procedures

  • Time passes quickly – Long treatments feel shorter, and most patients have little to no memory of the experience afterward

Sedation is just one part of how we make dentistry accessible and comfortable. Our team are trained to manage anxiety, explain every step of your treatment, and ensure that you feel reassured at all times.

Does Dental Sedation Hurt?

We make comfort a top priority. While some aspects of dental treatment, such as injections or extractions, can feel nerve-wracking, we take steps to minimise discomfort:

  • Apply numbing gel before injections

  • Ensure the treatment area is fully numb before starting

  • Offer regular breaks during longer procedures

  • Explain each step clearly so you know what’s happening

If you have questions or concerns, our super knowledgeable patient coordinators Jess and Selina are always available to guide you and discuss any worries in advance.

Can I Bring Someone With Me?

Absolutely. We encourage patients to bring a companion to their appointments if it makes them feel more at ease. Your support person can even accompany you into the dental surgery if needed.

Supporting Nervous Patients in Gloucester with Our Expanding Team

We are proud to have recently welcomed Dr Olivia Coleman to the practice. Olivia graduated from the University of Bristol in 2016 and has a strong background in oral surgery, including experience at Guy’s Hospital in London, one of the UK’s leading oral surgery departments.

Olivia’s passion lies in oral surgery and conscious sedation, helping patients feel calm, comfortable, and cared for throughout their treatment. Alongside her expertise, our treatment coordinators Jess and Selina spend time with patients, explaining procedures step by step. Many patients find that after this support, sedation isn’t even needed.

During the past year, the practice has also welcomed our therapy dog, Posey, who has quickly become adored by patients. One patient, Cynthia Faulkner, commented on Facebook:

“Posey brought such a calming presence. Just a beautiful puppy with velvet fur, delightful ears, and eyes that could potentially anaesthetise you. It was a joy to meet her – and Tom the dentist was fantastic!”

From the warm welcome at reception to thorough aftercare, we focus on creating a calm, consistent, and supportive experience.
