Post Extraction Instructions
For the rest of the day:
DO NOT
- Use mouthwash
- Have hot food or drinks
- Rush around or lift heavy objects
- Have alcoholic drinks
- Smoke; this can lead to a very painful condition (dry socket)
- Suck on the socket as this causes bleeding
DO
- If the socket bleeds, bite firmly on the pack provided for 20 minutes without letting go.
- Take care when eating and drinking before the numbness wears off.
- Take painkillers as needed, taking care not to exceed the recommended dose.
On the next day and for the following week:
- Rinse the socket gently after meals with hot salt water for 1 minute
- Use 1 teaspoon of salt to a cup of water as hot as you can comfortably bear.
- If you have any problems with the socket, please contact the practice.
