Fixed Appliance - Lingual
Fixed appliances are the more traditional form of braces used when control is imperative to guide teeth more accurately. Made from brackets and bands that are temporarily stuck to the teeth, and joined together by a flexible wire, the appliance cannot be taken out by the wearer and so is called a fixed appliance. Lingual fixed appliances are a modern alternative to the traditional metal fixed appliance. They are placed on the lingual or tongue side of your teeth so they are hidden from view.
They are used to manage the more extreme irregularities of the teeth when appearance is the major consideration. Whilst their appeal is in their invisibility, there are several drawbacks: they can have a short-term effect on speech, and treatment is more expensive because of the high laboratory costs in manufacturing the braces, and the extra time and expertise needed for their successful management.
