Amalgam Fillings
Dental amalgam is the traditional silver-coloured filling we are all familiar with. It has been in use as a filling material for over 150 years and is very durable and long lasting. Using amalgam to fill a cavity (hole) in a tooth is a relatively quick and straightforward process. It is best used where appearance is not considered to be a problem or where the patient cannot tolerate a longer treatment process.
Although there is mercury in dental amalgam, once it is combined with the other materials (silver, tin, copper etc) in the amalgam filling its chemical nature is changed rendering it harmless. Although very small amounts of mercury may be released with heavy grinding, research into the safety of dental amalgam has been carried out for over a century and to date, no trustworthy controlled studies have found a connection between amalgam fillings and any medical problem.
