What is Invisalign and how does it work?

Invisalign: The Clear Alternative to Braces

These days we’re so used to seeing bright, white, perfect teeth that are often too good to be true. A “celebrity smile” usually takes quite a lot of work that can be damaging to teeth. For a kinder approach, Invisalign is a much safer & conservative way to straighten teeth. We can then easily go on to whiten them to give them back their sparkle.
To start the process for Invisalign, we would firstly check if you were suitable to go ahead with treatment with an orthodontic assessment. We look at how your teeth fit together & how crowded they are. It may also be necessary to take some X-Rays at this appointment. If all seems well & you are suitable for treatment, we will then go on to take some impressions of your teeth to send off to Invisalign. They will take a close look at the models and digitally analyse them to provide you with an image of how your teeth could look after treatment. As you can imagine, this is always pretty exciting to see!

From the models, Invisalign will then make aligner trays just for you that are smooth & comfortable and virtually invisible. They fit over your teeth and you tend to change them every two weeks. Once all your trays are ready we can start the process by checking the fit of the first tray & giving you full instructions.

Each aligner is usually worn for around 2 weeks before it’s changed and over time this gently shifts your teeth into the correct position. We recommend you wear the aligners as much as possible, around 20 hours a day. The more you wear them, the quicker the teeth will move.

Treatment times vary depending on how severe your crowding is and we will try our best to give you an estimate of your treatment time.

Once you have completed your Invisalign treatment, we advise you to wear your final aligner for a number of months at night time to keep them in their final position. It is at this point you can go on to whiten your teeth if you’d like.

Invisalign treatment is so popular with our patients as it’s so comfortable & discreet. Why not contact us on 01452524024 to start your Invisalign journey?

Do braces hurt and how do they feel? (Sharon’s smile makeover part 2)

If you remember earlier this year Sharon started on her journey to improve her smile. These are her thoughts:

“I had my ceramic braces put on in February, so have now had them for just over 3 months.
It took me just under a week to get used to the braces. The first few days were a bit uncomfortable, but not so much that I needed painkillers.
The worse thing was the braces rubbed a bit on my gums, but Cotteswold House gave me an aftercare packet which had some wax in which I could place on those sore areas.
I’ve seen Dr Neal 3 times now to have my elastics which hold my wire changed. This is quite a quick appointment – I’m normally only there for 20 minutes. Again because the brace is tight you do feel some pressure but that soon goes.
I’m really starting to see big changes to the position of my teeth qand am so pleased I’ve had it on. As an added bonus, it has really helped with my diet 🙂 ”

These are good points made by Sharon and really tie in with the main queries about braces (orthodontics):

1. How much will treatment cost?
We know price is an important consideration for you. There is no way to accurately answer this question without first coming in for a consultation.
At Cotteswold House are fees are generally between £3-4000. This fee also includes teeth whitening to really show off your new smile!

2. How can you prepare for treatment?
We would need to make sure all teeth are disease free and the gums healthy. This will provide optimum conditions for the best result.

3. How can your dentist work out if you are suitable for treatment?
The best way is to book a consultation. Please call 01452524024 to arrange a free initial consultation.

4. How long will the process take?
Each individual case varies. Treatment tends to range from 6 to 18 months.

5. What are the downsides/side effects of treatment?
There are very few downsides to these systems. With Invisalign® you will be required to remove the aligner or braces when you are eating to prevent food getting stuck under it and for fixed ceramic brackets you need to ensure your teeth cleaning is excellent.

6. Will it hurt?
There could be some discomfort during the initial stages of tooth movement. The way orthodontics works is to introduce constant but steady pressure on your teeth. This results in you only feeling light pressure on the teeth. You would not experience any pain, just some discomfort, which means the teeth are moving.

Starting My Smile Makeover – Sharon

I had been aware of my front teeth which had started to chip, so I had an assessment with Dr Steven Neal, as to what options were available to improve on the appearance.

The consultation was very thorough, and I felt completely at ease with Dr Neal as we discussed my concerns and came up with a plan to help me improve my teeth. We decided that I should have a short course of braces to put my teeth in a better position in how I bite together, then to have porcelain veneers on my front teeth. I was so excited at the end of this appointment, that we took moulds of my teeth there and then!

Fast forward to today and I have just had my ceramic braces put on (Quick Straight Teeth). The whole experience was brilliant and Dr Neal and Scarlet put me at ease throughout. They feel comfortable, but I have been warned there may be some mild discomfort later tonight. They look great and no-one would really know I had anything on my teeth. I needn’t have worried about my main concern of them affecting my speech, being a receptionist, – there has been no change at all!

As I progress in my journey I will post more! 🙂

Here is a photo of me wearing them:

Helping with stained teeth

As the Christmas season is soon to be upon us, we are sure you want to have a healthy sparkling smile to go with your party dresses and suits.

Over the next couple of weeks, we are going to provide you with tips to help reduce any embarrassment about stained and discoloured teeth.

Why do teeth stain?

Stained teeth can be caused by drinking coke, coffee and tea, or consuming stain producing foods such as red wine or blueberries (!). Also nicotine is a main cause of staining.

Plaque deposits as a result of not brushing correctly or flossing can also cause stains.

Biting on hard objects can cause microcracks which will rapidly stain and are hard to clean.

How do you stop staining teeth?
  • Limit the amount of coffee and tea
  • Avoid smoking
  • Have regular visits with your dentist and hygienist
  • Brush and floss properly
  • The use of some toothpastes can help to remove minor stains

Next time we will be talking about ways in which we can help to remove stains.
